Boarding schools represent about a third of the accredited schools in membership of the Independent Schools Council: in 2007 more than 67,000 pupils boarded at accredited independent schools throughout the UK. In addition, there are approximately 4,000 boarders in the 36 accredited state-maintained boarding schools.
